More than 5,000 experts on the treatment of pain will arrive in Glasgow this weekend for the biggest conference hosted by the city this year.
The 12th World Congress on Pain at the Scottish Exhibition + Conference Centre from August 17 - 22 will be worth £10.9m to the Glasgow economy.
Specialists from around the world will discuss a variety of subjects including using pain experts to work with the survivors of torture and war; similarities and differences between studies of animals and humans; genetic association studies in human pain; pain from spinal injury; spontaneous pain; children’s experience of pain; and developments in painful HIV-associated neuropathies.
The conference is a major coup for the city as Glasgow saw off competition from Oslo, Copenhagen, Seville and The Hague to host the event.
The conference bid was led by Professor Sir Michael Bond, Emeritus Professor of Psychological Medicine at the University of Glasgow with assistance from Glasgow City Marketing Bureau (GCMB).
Sir Michael is one of more than 2,000 member of GCMB’s Conference Ambassador Programme, which offers free advice and support to academics, medics, scientists, and business people interested in bringing a conference to Glasgow.
Sir Michael will be speaking to the conference on pain in the developing world.
