The Convention Bureau at Glasgow City Marketing Bureau recently notched up two major conference wins, bringing total conference sales for the Bureau in its first eight months of operation under the city’s new structure for conference sales and marketing to £40 million.
Glasgow City Marketing Bureau is the official destination marketing agency for the city and was launched on April 1, 2005 following the reorganisation of Scottish tourism.
Prior to April 1 conference sales for Glasgow was delivered by Greater Glasgow & Clyde Valley Tourist Board. However, the Convention Bureau within GG&CVTB moved wholesale into Glasgow City Marketing Bureau on April 1 ensuring consistency of service and integration with the team responsible for the city branding campaign Glasgow: Scotland with style.
A small team from Glasgow City Marketing Bureau – headed by Chief Executive, Scott Taylor - was responsible for landing the 59th International Astronautical Congress for the city last month. It will take place in 2008 at the Scottish Exhibition + Conference Centre and will attract 2,000 delegates over the five-day conference.
Scott clinched the conference in an intense round of negotiations with the International Astornautical Federation at this year’s International Astronautical Congress in Fukuoka, Japan. He was assisted by representatives from the British Interplanetary Society and the SECC and the bid was backed by Scotland’s First Minister, Jack McConnell.
Previous meetings have taken place in Houston (2002), Bremen (2003) and Vancouver (2004). The bid for the IAC was three years in the making and Glasgow beat Milan into second place.
Another 2,500 delegate conference – the European Stroke Conference – was also won by Glasgow City Marketing Bureau last month. It will take place at the SECC in Glasgow from May 27 – June 1 2007.
The economic value of IAC and European Stroke combined is £6 million.

Note to Editors:
The reorganisation of Scottish tourism was initiated by the Scottish Executive to integrate Scotland’s 14 Area Tourist Board into VisitScotland, Scotland’s national tourism agency. Glasgow is unique in Scotland in having its own, independent city marketing bureau, and the Bureau works alone, or in conjunction with VisitScotland or VisitBritain to bring conferences to the city.
